The JCBRN Defence Centre of Excellence (COE) conducted the NATO CBRN Defence Evaluators course between 4th and 8th of April 2022. This was the first JCBRN Defence COE hybrid course organized for both residential, as well as virtual participants that met all the learning objectives while allowing the JCBRN Defence COE to further improve its e-learning capabilities and offerings.
The aim of this course was to prepare personnel responsible for the evaluation of CBRN defence for the NATO Response Force (NRF), achieving a common standard for CBRN certification. In addition, the course promotes evaluations as a tool to support commanders by training their teams and confirming that they are “combat ready/mission capable”. The course offered an extension of the Combat Readiness Evaluation (CREVAL) Course organized by NATO School Oberammergau with an aim to provide CBRN subject matter experts (SMEs) with additional information related to the evaluation programs. Prior to this course, the participants completed the NATO CREVAL Course or demonstrated a sound knowledge of Allied Doctrine Standards (AFS) CREVAL Volume (Vol.) VII.
To achieve this aim during the five-day course, the course included theoretical briefings, discussions, observations from NRF exercises and syndicate work where the students shared their experiences, points of view and held thought-provoking discussions. Following syndicate work, students briefed their results to all course personnel.
Several guest and support speakers delivered the most up-to-date and comprehensive lessons in accordance with the AFS CREVAL Vol. VII. The speakers were from the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), Allied Land Command (LANDCOM), 31st CBRN Defence Regiment (CZE) and JCBRN Defence COE. They shared their extensive CBRN related evaluation, knowledge and experience, and presented course material, mentored students and facilitated the course in the CBRN defence evaluation process, whilst focusing on the concepts, conduct and methodology of evaluation techniques.
The course was attended by 12 participants from 7 countries (Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, and the United States of America). The course feedback from the students reflected added value, not just to their current assignment but also to their career development.
