     The Joint CBRN Defence COE conducted the Introduction to the International CBRN Training Curriculum Course during the third week of MAY 2013. 32 participants/trainees from one NATO country (Italy) and four PfP nations (Kazakhstan, Armenia, Algeria and Azerbaijan) were trained in theoretical and practical applications.  The Italian contingent consisted of 26 members of the Military University and State Police involved in C-IED and CBRN operations.  The Supervisor of the course was a member of NATO’s Civil Emergency Planning Committee (CEPC).  The course also benefited from the outstanding lecturers provided from seven countries (five from NATO and two from PfP nations) who facilitated the sharing of experiences, knowledge and opinions between the participants.

          The Capability Requirement Review 16 (CRR-16) cycle of the NATO Defence Planning Process (NDPP) started with a kick-off workshop hosted at the Joint CBRN Defence Centre of Excellence in Vyskov, from 21 to 23 May 2013. The workshop was organized by the Allied Command Transformation Staff Element Europe (ACT SEE) and was attended by representatives from NATO’s International Military Staff (IMS), Allied Command Operations (ACO) Allied Command Transformation (ACT), The NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA), Joint Force Command (JFC) Naples, Joint CBRN Defence Capability Development Group (JCBRN-CDG), French Joint Staff and the JCBRN Defence COE.

     In accordance with the approved 2013 Program of Work (POW) the JCBRN Defence COE in conjunction with the United States Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) conducted the pilot program for the “International Radiological Assistance Program Training for Emergency Response (I-RAPTER), Basic Course from 13-16 May 2013 at the COE in Vyskov, Czech Republic.  This 3 and a half day course was also organized in cooperation with the Czech Republic’s NBC Defence Institute of the University of Defence.

      The JCBRN Defence COE held its latest Steering Committee meeting in Vyskov, Czech Republic from 24-25 Apr 2013.  Overall we believe it was one of the most productive meetings we have ever had and the Sponsoring Nations made a number of important decisions that will shape the future of the COE’s activities.

     On 12 April 2013 the JCBRN Defence COE hosted a prestigious visit from Allied Command Transformation’s (ACT) Chief of Staff, Vice Admiral C A Johnstone-Burt.  The admiral was accompanied by the Deputy Chief of the Czech General Staff, Major General Frantisek Maleninsky, as well as several other distinguished guests.
